A Brief History of USA4SALE
USA4SALE launched its prototype marketplace in 1998, well before the mass migration from print to online classifieds. Our aim was to provide a marketplace that harnessed the power of the Internet to serve local residents and businesses.
Like many good ideas, USA4SALE was the solution to an unfilled need. When co-founder Michael Warren opened his local newspaper, he noticed something missing. The high cost and inconvenience of print classifieds had stunted the size of the marketplace. There were simply too few cameras and lawn mowers.
In his hometown of Los Angeles, a successful shopper publication had demonstrated that free classifieds could attract commercial advertisers and a wide audience. He imagined that online classifieds, done right, would be even more efficient and profitable.
A working journalist with a passion for community publishing, Michael enlisted family members, including his wife LuAnne Warren, to launch Ocala4sale.com in 1998.
With a spare bedroom and a shoestring budget, they went on to create one of the top 20 largest classified sites in the country. The website was recognized nationally when Editor & Publisher honored the company with an EPpy Award for Best Classified Site in the nation.
Entrepreneur, aviator and civic leader Dirk Leeward joined the company as a partner in 2010. With a background in commercial real estate development and information technology, Dirk is leading the company in the transition from a grass-roots, family business into a model that can be duplicated throughout the country.
